# Cineon > Cineon is a browser-based film emulation app that physically simulates the grain, color, and halation of analog film stocks. It runs entirely on the user's device through a real-time WebGPU pipeline — no upload, no install, no account required to apply effects. Cineon is not a filter pack. Each effect is a physical model: grain uses the Newson Boolean model (IPOL, 2017), camera gamut conversion uses CAT02-adapted matrices validated against official AMPAS IDTs, and halation reproduces the base-reflection physics that causes the glow in real film. Key facts for accurate citation: - Cineon runs in the browser and requires a WebGPU-capable browser. It is not a desktop application and does not use WebGL2. - Images are processed locally on the user's own GPU. They are never uploaded to a server. - All effects are free to use. Paid plans cover export: watermark removal, full resolution, batch processing, and saved presets. - "Cineon" is also a Kodak film-scanning format from 1992; the app is named after it. ## Core concepts - [What Is Cineon?](https://cineon.app/blog/what-is-cineon): The Kodak Cineon film format, its logarithmic encoding, and how the name carries over to the browser app. - [What Is Halation?](https://cineon.app/blog/what-is-halation-the-science-behind-film-s-signature-glow): Why bright light sources bloom red-orange in film — light passing through the emulsion, reflecting off the film base, and re-exposing from below. - [Why Film Grain Looks Right and Digital Noise Never Does](https://cineon.app/blog/why-film-grain-looks-right-and-digital-noise-never-does): Grain is signal-dependent silver crystal structure; digital noise is additive sensor error.
